A Girl From Vienna

It has been a day since you left.  I met an amazing girl from Vienna.  You were my waitress, and you were the first thing I noticed at this wedding.  As we partied the night away.  I've always had my eyes on you.  Never taking them away.  As I slowly consumed all the alcohol that my body could take, I consumed enough courage to ask you for your number.  To my surprise you gave it to me.  I ended the night too inebriated to remember, but the only thing I remembered was your glasses and that perfect smile.  From that moment I was hooked.  I never waited the three day rule...by frankly I couldn't I only had 2 more days.  I texted you that night.

I woke up hungover and groggily, and not to my surprise, no text.  Figuring the number you gave was a fake.  I went to brunch.  Extremely hungover and eating my eggs I got what I was waiting for.  Your text buzzed so hard I was startled.  We started talking and I asked you out.  You said yes.  We were going to meet for Filipino food at Hotel am Brillantengrund.  As we had dinner you told me about your passion, I told you I had the same.  We talked about so many things.  I introduced you to my hero Mr. Bourdain and the joys of travel.  We walked talked and enjoyed the local district you lived in.  We were supposed to meet Steffy at 10, but we loss track of time due to talking.  We didn't meet them til 12.  :P We went out for a few more drinks and said our goodbyes.  Not thinking we would see each other again for an entire day the next.  But we did.

You took me to one of your favorite markets because thats what you love.  Seafood was on the agenda.  We got a major seafood platter with the works.  And you had scallops, real scallops for the first time.  You were amazed.  I showed you flavor combinations such as adding acid to dishes to make them pop.  You smiled, that God damn infectious smile.  It was stunning and breathtaking at the same time.  You do the most inappropriate thing when you love a plate.  You pick it up and lick it.  I loved it.  It was so you and you gave it so much character.  After lunch you showed me around town.  Taking me to your favorite spots and walking the city, just never stopping never thinking of anything, not having any direction.  From market to market, story to story.  I was learning you lived an amazing life.  From bartering in Peru, to living in Cuba for a month like a commoner.  Couch surfing was your thing.  Your free-spirit and soul.  I started falling like a star for you.  I thought this is it.  I found the one.  As our night was concluding, I thought I never see you again, having it so abrupt, I thought something was budding.  I was on a flight to Croatia, never thinking I see you again.

As I was in Croatia doing my Croatian things.  I received a text from you.  You booked a flight to NYC.  You were going to be staying with me for 2 weeks.  I quickly obliged and offered to house you.  There was no way I say no to you anyway.  The next week and a half was grueling, I couldn't wait to see you again.

September 17, you arrived and we had our first meal in our town.  Hotpot.  I knew you liked it but not for me.  I was quickly learning you love your veggies.  You are definitely not a meat eater.  And soon enough I was becoming to know your likes and dislikes.  We were together for two whole weeks.  I took you to places you've never been and you did the same for me.  You took me to Manhattan, I took you to Brooklyn.  We were two peas in a pod.  You introduced me to your friends and I introduced you to mine.  I was living a dream.  And every night that I could.  I hugged you and kissed you.  Everything was a happy dream that was about to come crashing down.

It was the last full day in Brooklyn.  I was going to take you to as many places as possible.  I was going to ask you your favorite places and things.  I was going to ask you about us.  When I did, I didn't think I was going to hear what I was going to hear.  It wasn't going to workout.  There was never anything between us.  This was just it.  My heart grew weary, devastated again.  I sat there eating my biscuits and gravy.  I had tried to give you everything.  And I did.  Did I do something wrong?  Where did I mess up?  You said I didn't, you said I was perfect.  I didn't do anything wrong.  It just wasn't there.  My heart sank to my stomach.  It has been almost 10 years since I've felt this way.  Since Bjonda.  I've been guarded and jaded.  I only really go for the random hookups and the Tinder/Bumble lifestyle.  Because I knew I couldn't be hurt or broken that way.

I never will blame her.  This was my own doing.  Did she lead me on.  Probably not, this was just her demeanor.  Friendly, warm, and bubbly.  She is who she is.  And what it is it is.

The last day with her, I couldn't breathe or be around her.  Still reeling from the devastation, but I trucked on making sure to make her last few hours here amazing as I could.  After all, what kind of host would I be?  As I dropped her off at her stop so she could take the train to the airport I gave her one last kiss and a hug and saw her off.  I cried on the subway back home, not caring who saw.  I was officially a New Yorker.

I don't know if I'll ever see her again, or even talk to her again.  Extremely selfish on my end.  I know.  But for one brief moment in my life, I was extremely happy.  I don't think I could ever turn my feelings off for her, I don't even know if I could ever talk to her again.  But I hope she knows a part of her soul is with me.  And I hope a part of mine is with her.

To the girl I met in Vienna.  I will always love you.

Wei's Back!

It was a great weekend this weekend. I can't fancy that enough.  You know that thing I've been trying to do, well I did it.  Well guess what, I'll tell you more about this later on, for now lets look what happen and how this weekend actually started.

Friday, so lets start on that day.  I took a half day from work, and guess what, best thing ever.  So anyway, it was Suzanne's birthday, so I wanted to make sure everything was welled prepared for her.  Picked up her gifts, and waited for everyone to get home to head down to AC for the night.  First stop Chickies and Petes for dinner.  Next stop AC!  So we get there of course the first thing me and Dave do, hit the tables of course.  Cause well that's what you gotta do, you play to win you're down there right?  Of course you do.  I didn't win, so yeah, that's what happens when you go down there, however it's been forever since I've been down, and losing, well it doesn't hurt as much, so no worries.  However, I got to do it all over again next week.  Oh man...I can definitely win my money back next week though right?  Fuck yes, of course I can.

Okay, welcome to Saturday.  Oh man, what a day Saturday was, it was probably the most awesomest day ever.  Started off with a nice run in the morning, watched a little anime/tv, then another walk/jog with Dave at the park.  Good times, then right after, a nice game of NHL 13 at Jay's parents house we head to the mall.  Picked a nice outfit for Dave's big day on Monday, and finally headed towards the Northern Liberties in Philly.  So for a while I've been talking about this sweetheart of a girl at this bar called Dos Segundos.  So as me, Dave, and Jay sat and had dinner at a table, I glanced across the bar and saw her.  I knew she saw me, and she smiled.  Do I think she remembered me?  I don't know, but my heart was a flutter and it began pounding a mile a minute.  It has been a while where a girl has given me this feeling.  Does it sound gay?  Of course it does, but when a girl breaks your heart, and you finally find someone across the room that makes you kinda melt inside, it's a little special.  Anyway, there she was, and I did what I always do best...*sigh* drink.

That's right folks, good old liquid courage, because on this night, Wei was going to do what he totally didn't want to do, but needed to.  Because honestly, it has been too long, and I'm pretty sure I need to get back out there.  Oh, and yes, I put myself into third person, so shut up and no need to put me on blast for it, unless you want to...jerks.  So after our meals, we pay the waitress and head to the bar.  After talking for a bit, and my inebriation levels increasing, I finally was able to ask her name, get to know her a little, and you know the same shit I always do, which is try to be me.  I don't know if it ever works or not, however I can't be anyone else but me.  Well the night was coming to an end, I definitely wasn't going to leave without asking her.  So, mustered up the courage, and asked her to dinner.  With a sad look on her face, I knew what was going to happen next...because folks, she had a boyfriend, and I knew.  Why  because as Dave, Jay, and I were having dinner, I saw her talking to a guy outside of the bar.  Then I saw her giving him a peck on the cheek, and what looked like a squeeze of the hand as he walked away.  They had that look...the look that I want, the look that I want to have and wish I can get again.  I knew right there and then, this girl was taken, and her heart belonged to someone else.  I didn't have the heart to tell Jay and Dave, and guys, this is why I was so quiet, because right at that moment, as my heart was a flutter...at that same time, it broke and shattered all in one evening.  However, that is life folks, and well...100% of the shots never taken, never go in.  So I asked, and I found out what I already knew.  Sometimes you just need to hear it first hand.  I'll always have that bar that is becoming one of my favorites, and hopefully one day I'll become a regular too.  On to the next one Wei, on to the next one.

So yeah, this is my life at the moment, what I want I can't have, what I can have I don't want.  There's this story, a girl is speeding on the highway, and she gets pulled over.  The cop says to her, "Sweetie, I've been waiting for you all day."  And the girl tells the officer, "I'm so sorry officer, I've been trying to get here as quick as I can."  And even though the joke/story isn't funny or anything, it does have a meaning, I don't know where this girl is suppose to be in my life, however there is one out there.  And what I don't know is...she's on her way.  She's trying to get here into my life, and I'll work on that soon.  Some days I feel like Ted from, HIMYM.  Doing my hook ups and loving the single life, but at the same time, I miss that feeling, that look, that linger.  I can say it on here, cause well this is my soapbox, and I'm allowed to be a pussy/pansy.  However in all honesty, I know no one wants to die alone or be single forever.  I'm just keeping it real.  Live, love, laugh...that's what it's all about right?  Of course it is, of course it is.

Enjoy Eisley folks, it fits the theme of this blog.  Oh, not my video, so don't hate, just something I found on youtube.  So enjoy.

Oh hey guys, one last thing, my friend Paul is trying to get people to see his band at Souper Groove Music Festival this year.  Check him out, the site is https://www.facebook.com/soupergroove. Contact Paul Galdi for more info.  Should be a cool thing.  ^___^

Duuuhhh...I Don't Know

Life is simple.  You're born, you be a kid, do kid stuff.  Then you grow up a little, go to kindergarten, go to school, and learn stuff.  Then you grow up some more, go to middle school learn things have fun with your friends, be merry and happy.  You grow up some more, learn more things, go to high school learn about other stuff, be merry and happy.  Grow up some more, go to college, get a degree learn a bunch of shit, be happy, be merry.  Grow up even more, get a job, learn about the real world work your ass off till you can retire and be happy and be merry.

Now there is a bunch of shit that I didn't throw in there, and I'm going to tell you right now, the shit that I didn't throw in there is for a reason, cause well...it's the main topic.  All the while, as you grow up and you try to figure shit out and do the best you can to be happy and merry and learn a ton of shit, the opposite sex becomes involved.  That's when life gets difficult no?  I mean, by no means do I think the opposite sex is bad, on the contrary, them shits straight up delicious.  However it seems the more you're in a relationship, the more of a pain in the ass it can be.

It has been less than 3 months, and I've seen about three relationships that went to rainbows and sunshines, to kinda going into the shitter.  I don't know what to think, by frankly the more I think about it, the more I enjoy being not tied down.  I don't like hearing the dreadful stages of the relationship.  However, the more I do hear it, the more I believe that everyone goes through it.  By no means am I a Dr., even though I want to play one soooooooo badly.  And if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you in California.  Seriously, I feel for these guys and gals.  Not only these acquaintances/friends/family members worry me.  I kinda think to myself, gee what do you do after the honeymoon stage is over?  And if the honeymoon stage is over?  Does that mean the relationship can't last?  It is what it is I guess.  Some have to work harder to push the relationship to the next stage, some choose to forfeit and let it go.  There was a video my brother showed me...I guess about a year ago.  It kinda reminded me of what a few of my friends/family are going through now.  Check it out below.

Yeah, it's a bunch of Asian actors, but it depicts a relationship pretty well.  Good for these guys making an epic video.  Oh yeah, and another thing, that song you hear at the end.  The one and only...Kina Grannis.  Just thought I throw that out there.

Well that's my rant a rave tonight, and a tip to all my friends out there that are in that slump in their relationship.  You argue cause it conveys some sort of communications, however constantly arguing will not help the cause, you gotta be able to listen as well.  However, when you know it's not right, you just know.  But don't lose faith and let go so easily, fight for what you love.  Think it through, and remember, is the juice worth the squeeze.  Peace out kids.

Dear 16 Year Old Self

The following blog is a letter to my 16 year old self...let the rules of the butterfly effect not be part of this.

Dear 16 Year Old Self,

This is a letter to you, to let you realize that there will be bumpy times ahead, and to also let you know, there are many, many, many great times ahead.  The good will definitely out weigh the bad.  You may not like what you hear, and you may not enjoy what you think is lecture.  However, this will all benefit you in the future.  You should learn from it, and take the experiences that I have learned to heart.  You may think I'm just an old square right now as you're reading this, but trust me.  I have the experience, and I know what is ahead.

So let's begin, 16 year old self, in a couple of years, you will be telling yourself, "Omg, time has flew by, I'm going to college already, and these last four years were amazing."  Trust me you will be saying this, this is one of the many conversations you will have on the bus with Jay.  Oh and by the way young self, Omg = oh my god.  Enjoy high school, you are right, it will be the time of your life.  You will gain so many friends and experiences.  You will forever have the memories of the greatest time of your life.  It is a blast, and you will understand when college starts.  I understand you are bitching and moaning right now, because you are stuck in a restaurant, but trust me, that restaurant is worth it.  By frankly when you get older, you're going to want to go back in.  It may one day be your passion in life.  So cherish what you have, don't take any of it for granted, those experiences that you have now, are going to be life experiences and work ethics that you will forever carry with you when you will be out in the real world.  The friends you have are all very special at this age.  They all think you are great, believe in them, you are a pretty nice kid.  However pay special attention to a few of them.  They will break your balls in the future because they think you were a big shot, however keep reminding them, you are nothing without them.  Especially David W. Haberle, he is one of your greatest friends in the future.  You think you are cool with him now, playing chess and other stuff in study hall.  But he is one of your best friends in the future, you will die for that kid if you had to, and I know for a fact that he would do the same for you.  He will join the Tripod, to create a table that will stand strong.  I would mention DeMaria and Jay, but you know in your heart, you will not separate easily from those two goof balls, and you will be right.

Enjoy college 16 year old self.  It is more of a blast than you think.  Study more, drink less, party less.  Scratch that last part, try to do both.  Whether you think the path you are on is wrong or right, you will not know until you get there.  It may seem hard, and you may get bored of it, but stick with what you started with.  It will one day be your greatest strength.  Enjoy each minute of it, you will meet one of your future best friend there as well.  He is a hoot, a kid from Cherry Hill, you will meet him in a marketing class possibly.  You will talk about things, and think that he really is a great guy and good friend.  You may get competitive with him in marketing, but that's how he is.  He's competitive.  George Henehan will become the umbrella in the middle of the table that has been created.  You will stand strong, and Georgie will protect us when we need him most.  He is strong willed, and the most hilarious drunk that you will meet, you don't know it, but George will play an important role in your life.  He is good people, Beyonce told me so.

Love.  Do not fall for the t.v. and movie theater love story.  Love is nothing like that, you probably watched, "Can't Hardly Wait," for the umpteenth time by now.  Love is nothing like that.  Quite frankly, it's more like, "500 Days of Summer."  You will meet many women in your life 16 year old self.  You don't think you're a stud machine, and guess what? You aren't.  However you are a gentleman to the very end and chivalry isn't dead.  Remember you have 3 sisters, treat them with respect.  Treat all women with respect.  There will be a period when you will get your heart broken.  It is the tragedies in life.  It will hurt, and it will continue to hurt, and it will be a while till you feel better.  You will feel jaded towards women, and you will be with women you have no love towards.  It is just the way it is young self.  You will not believe in love, you will think getting some is the answer, you will think it's just easy to just do what you need to do and leave.  You will break hearts, and you will not love.  You will drink.  You will drink until you feel no pain.  You will drink more alcohol than your liver can handle, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel, you will get over it.  Believe me, you will.  If you can learn one thing from me, learn that the answers in life are not at the bottom of a bottle of scotch.  It will all be a distant memory, and who knows, you may even be able to go back and be friends with her again.  There will be other women who will come to you in life, and there will be one who you will love.  She will remind you that love is possible again.  She will break a piece of the ice that surrounds your heart, and your heart will be able to start beating again.  Even if you may not talk to her for a while, you will.  Don't let such a precious friend go.  She is too kindhearted to be treated that way.  She was a friend, treat her as one.  Let it go, let it all go.  It's not worth it.  You will find happiness, it just won't be handed to you.  Earn it.

16 year old self, you may not believe it when I tell you this, but believe it.  You will travel, you will travel the world.  Learn from it, the Italian course that you are taking now.  Keep learning, if you can keep learning, you will use it.  You will go to Amsterdam, Italy, and hopefully Japan, a new spot every year.  You will learn so much and realize, there is bigger piece of the world out there.  Your problems will be petty, and you will realize life is way to short to even have problems like the ones you will have.  Do as much traveling as you can.  You will not regret it.  You will come across things in life, and realize that you are very insignificant.  All the trips that Ching Ping tells you about, they are important.  Learn from her.  CP is highly intelligent.  She knows more than you think.  She is wise beyond her years.  She knows more than you will ever realize, and traveling is part of that.

Family, 16 year old self, family is very important.  They will be the ones to always take care of you.  Do not take them for granted.  Remember that.  CP will give you more life experience than you can ever imagine.  She seems like a know it all, but that's because she does know a lot.  Ching L. and Ching T. will be there to take care of you.  No matter how much a pain in the ass they can be sometimes, they mean well.  Listen to them.  They are your big sisters for a reason, and lastly Wei Tak.  He's smart, very smart, you may fight with him now at the age you are at, but when you are older, Wei Tak will be one of your best friends, scratch that, he will be your big brother that he is suppose to be.  And he loves you more than you can imagine.  Follow him, he has big dreams and a big future.  Whether you work with him or not, believe in him.  He can do it.

16 year old Wei, believe in yourself.  If you think you can play the guitar.  Don't dawdle, start soon.  Cause if not, in 10 years you will anyway.  You're going to take classes and have a pretty awesome teacher.  Follow your heart young Wei.  Don't get discourage, learn to keep on fighting.  You're going to want to quit, but you have more to gain if you don't.  Life is good, and you are the one that has to believe in that.

16 year old me.  If you are reading this, you shall be coming to the end of this letter, here are a few bonus tips.  Go to California, Mission Viejo to be exact, and find a girl by the name of Kina Grannis, tell her that she's amazing, and that she's going to be famous one day.  Tell her, that she should keep singing, and sing so that everyone can hear her.  See if she will fall in love with you, because by frankly future Wei, me, would love you.  Seriously, she will be your inspiration in life, you will pick up a guitar because of her, you will travel the world to see her in concert, and her music will inspire you.  Remember that.  Buy Apple stocks NOW!!!  Seriously, they probably just came out with a colorful iMac at around your time.  Buy their stocks now, you will be freaking loaded.  They have so much stuff coming out in the near future, it will be totally worth it if you do.  Honestly, I'm typing on a Mac as I write this to you.  Bet on the Phillies 16 year old self, they will be great.  Lastly 16 year old self, life is good, life is grand even.  There may be times when you don't think so, but remember this you only have one life.  Take full advantage of it.  You have family and friends that love you.  Carpe Diem really means more than you think.  Live life to the fullest, do things you would never usually do.  You only get one of these 16 year old self.  Live it.

Sincerely,
27 year old You, Wei Kwok
